Surveying Today
Today I serveyed the area we are digging. Bethsaida is a very large city and we are diging in a fairly small area, but that doesn't mean the surveying is easier. Presice measurements and drawings have to be made and taken with ancient tools... well tools from the 1930's. Not to mention the temp. today it got up to 110 and it felt every bit of that in the shade.
After digging I went with a dorm mate for the most amazing swim of my life in the Sea of Galilee. The water was like a mirror and the mountains and ridge cities were clearly seen in the reflection. It was cool and nice.
I must got to pottery reading and lecture.

Dehydration
I must remember to continuously drink water. It is so hot here in the mid afternoons that I've been sweating most of the moisture from my body in minutes. I felt miserable most of the day due to dehydration but tomorrow should be better. I've drank nearly 5.5 liters today so far. Can't wait for the sun to go down
Off to pottery reading, we found some larger body pieces today that will hopefully match an earlier discovery with a really incredible pattern.

Shalom
I am in Israel on an archeological excavation at the biblical site Bethsaida. The site itself is located just east of the Jordan river. We are staying on a kibbutz called Ginnosar (much like a commune) on the Sea of Galilee a few miles south from the site. During the morning we dig and at noonish we return for lunch and showers. Digging is hard work in the heat but definitely rewarding. I've been finding a great deal of Roman pottery shards, mostly wall shards the size of a finger, some as big as my hand. Handles are not as commonly found, but I happened to find several today. Most exciting part of the day was the base of a Hellanistic style bowl almost fully intact, found by one of the women in the group. She made the find just as the History Channel filming crew showed up to shoot an episode of the Naked Archeologist. I had never heard of the program, but it was fun to watch none the less. No one however was naked. The crew interviewd the woman who found it and of course they spent a number of hours filming Dr. Arav the archeologist who found the site in 1986. They did actually film us digging for quite a while, but who knows if they'll use the footage.
I will continue to update throughout my stay here. Unfortunately I'm unable to upload photos from this community computer... they may have to wait til I return.

Bye bye, jobbie–job....hello brain flex.
Today is my last day of work...and it's almost over!
For those of you who don't already know, I'm blowin outta this city and moving to Omaha in August to start my BFA in painting at UNO. Exciting!
Really I'm replacing one routine with another, only the new routine will be much more rewarding creatively and will most likely make me crazier. Which I'm cool with.
As much as I sometimes hated working for an ad firm I am gonna miss some those jokers.

The CIA transportation of suspected terrorists to so called "dark prisons" for interrogation through torture not allowed legally on US soil. The website shows CIA planes that are tracked by citizens from around the world and displayed in an interactive simulation based on a time line starting in 2001 going to the present day.
I guess this proves we're not all as ignorant as or government rulers have hoped?

According to this article there's a good chance that evolution is not strictly do to mutations in genes over hundreds of thousands of years. In fact it seems to suggest that changes can happen much quicker than previously thought. Very cool.

I love the way this man thinks. The "Creator" would surely be proud of what he created. Oh humans....
What is it that makes us work obliviously? Makes us mow lawns, deliver pizza, or sit in offices while the gingerbread house, made partially from human rights and partially from nature itself, is being nibbled away by small minded glutinous, big corporation Hansel and Gretels? What is it that makes people, socially educated and progressively inspired, drop their guard like an elephant hunted by lions eventually conceding to the relentless attacks of the lazy and comfortable? The beast that is human nature?
Maybe, but I do think we need to be less "comfortable".

Museum of Christian History!
This has already been posted on Elisabeth's blog and most likely hundreds more....but I just can't help myself. There are so many things wrong with this place.
Did you ever see the movie Idiocracy? Not a great movie but I feel like it was some sort of ridiculous premonition for this. The "museum" feels like it's one step closer to the setting of that movie. Anyway, it's Museum of Natural History meets fairytale wonderland, only with Christian guilt and rhetoric layered in. Scaaary.
Although I must say it would be quite a treat to see the Noah's Ark exhibit where supposedly the boat is reconstructed at actual size. Remember: that's big enough to accommodate for the approximate 1.8 million different species of animals we have been able to record on the planet, two of each, including all the dinosaurs and minus the fish of course. And big enough for all the food and clean water it would take to sustain those animals for 5-6 months (some say longer). Not to mention all the plants and other living organisms that would have been destroyed. That's gotta be one big fucking boat.
Hey Noah, how did you keep the animals from eating each other? And hey, Noah why did you not warn all the other people on the planet? Yeah, that sounds to me like kind of a dick move Noah.
